The trend of truck accidents causing huge losses continued over this past weekend as well. On Thursday night, a truck carrying over 2,000 piglets from North Carolina to Iowa overturned on a ramp. The accident caused firefighters to go a rescue mission to secure the little animals, but despite heroic efforts the men could not save about 700 of the piglets from dying. The crash caused traffic on the highway to stop on Thursday night.
According to the Wayne Township Fire Department tweets, the truck accident happened around 6:30 pm on Thursday evening. Firefighters from multiple agencies spent a good four hours trying to round up the piglets that had run around after the truck overturned. According to Raleigh, NC, truck accident attorneys, the animals were on their way to Iowa and details have not been released about the company that was transporting them or their final address in Iowa to where they were originally headed.
Concerns about animal transportation in the US
After the crash, many have raised concerns about the way livestock is transported in the country. The 1,300 surviving piglets were back on the road Friday morning after having spent the night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. A makeshift shelter was created to house the animals for the night.
Animal rights activists say that it is sincerely inhumane to transport 2,000 pigs inside a truck for a 16 hour journey. Though the group Indiana Pork Farmers say that the tractor trailers are specially equipped for the journey, the animal rights activists say that what is being done is just not enough. Well, it is the winter so that is not as bad for body heat purposes. It actually makes sense. But in the summer, this could be pretty warm for the little pigs.
Indians State Police helped in rescue
Indiana State Police which helped in the pig-rescue says that the whole gig was something that rescue fighters had to figure out on the spot. There is certainly no guidelines anywhere saying how one should round up small piglets running amok after their transport van decides to overturn! Considering the situation, it is certainly praiseworthy that the officials managed to round up most of the animals. If the animal rights activists were listened to though, Americans would never eat pork and that is just not practical.
Raleigh, NC, truck accident attorneys say that the main reason for the tractor trailer to overturn was that the truck driver was going too fast for the ramp. Investigations are continuing and citations have been issued. The authorities are not yet divulging the names of the driver of the tractor trailer or the company that was running the operation.
Monroe County Sherriff deputy laid to rest
In other news, the town of Monroe in North Carolina bid adieu to a Union County Sherriff’s deputy who was killed in a freak accident some days ago when a tractor-trailer flipped and overturned on his car while waiting at a stop signal on Highway 74. The deputy was crushed instantly while in his car.
The driver of the tractor-trailer Eddie Weeks is currently facing charges for misdemeanor by vehicle. According to eyewitnesses, Eddie was approaching the signal where the deputy’s car was standing but he misjudged the speed and could not stop in time. He then jack knifed his vehicle causing the accident.
